RV Generator Tech Advances
The RV generator is becoming increasingly popular as the camping industry continues to grow. Like any major mechanical or electrical device, deciphering features and specs can be tricky. What do the terms mean? What features are important when making a purchase? We thought it helpful to provide a breakdown of some typical generator lingo.
Some Technical Terms
Noise Level: This is a concern for every camper, both those who use them and those who hate them. Up until the last few years, most campers (including our family) did everything possible to avoid a site with a generator close by.This is changing. New products have noise suppression systems which limit decibel levels to 60-65 db at close range and decreasing with distance. For a real life comparison, normal conversation in a business office is 70 db, a whisper quiet library 30 db.
Quiet RV Generators
Sinewave Technology: A new system capable (in conjunction with an inverter) of producing a much more consistent power output. In technical terms, sine wave devices draw current in a sinusoidal waveform, eliminating output fluctuations. In practical terms, you can run sensitive equipment like computers without worrying about damage from power spikes. Rated Output Power: Stated in watts, is a meaure of the device's power output under normal conditions. Maximum Output Power: Again in watts, measures the maximum load (appliances you can run) for a short period of time. More simply, add up the wattage demanded by any combination of appliances (see chart). Don't operate any more devices at one time than the rated outputs allow. Depending on size and cost, rv generator power outputs range between 1000 - 6000 watts or more. Emissions: the exhaust particles ejected by the device after combustion. Emission ratings, like automobiles, have been vastly improved in newer models. Inverter: One of the latest technological advances--a computer module designed to adjust output voltage to a constant level. This allows sensitive electronic equipment (computers and newer appliances with microprocessor controls--basically all newer appliances) to run off the generator.
Sinewave Inverter Generators
These advances in technology have made the once noisy intruder much more bearable. Today's rv generator is quieter, lighter, more fuel efficient, portable and environmentally friendly than ever before. This is good news considering an increasing number of RVers are going off the beaten path to enjoy the outdoors.
